Wind
Shell is involved in eight wind projects in North America and three in Europe. Total capacity is around 1,100 megawatts, with Shell’s share at 50%. Shell’s share of wind-generated electricity saves around 1 million tonnes of CO2 a year compared to the same quantity generated from a coal-fired plant.
Solar
Joint venture partner Saint-Gobain has acquired Shell’s 50% stake in the AVANCIS photovoltaic company in Germany. AVANCIS currently has a total capacity of 20MWp. This step is part of Shell's move to focus on alternative energies closest to its core competencies of biofuels and CO2 capture and storage.
Together with Saint-Gobain, Shell has taken an important renewable technology from the R&D stage to the point of large-scale manufacturing, which is a small but key contribution towards helping resolve the energy challenge.
